( 'J'
1'-

TUESDAY

JUNE 24. 1969

that Council--in making future appointments to the School Board--be concerned

with naming appointees who will develop the very best integrated school system,

suggesting that membership of the Board include at least three persons who

have professional educational training and/or experience. Upon motion,

duly seconded and unanimously carried, and after acknowledging with

appreciation both Mr. Womack's con~ents and the splendid services rendered

by all members of the School Board, Council reappointed Messrs. Reed and

Putney to membership on the Board for three-year terms beginning July 1, 1969.

Council continued for further consideration a proposed Job Classification-

Merit Pay Plan for City employees.

Council received--for review during its forthcoming street inspection tour--a

request from citizens and property owners residing on Yorkshire Road-Carver

Court-Maxine Road requesting improvements to the entrance to Yorkshire Road.

Council unanimously accepted the following report (dated June 23, 1969) from

a special Board of Viewers, composed of Messrs. W. B. Muse, Jr., Leroy Perkins,

and Joseph W. Pritchett, whose findings indicated that no inconvenience would

resul t (in their opinion) from the closing and vacating of liD" Street between

Fourth Street and Roundabout Road:

Pursuant to your memorandum of May 30, 1969, your three viewers met
on June 2, 1969 and viewed "D" Street between Fourth Street and
Roundabout Road and the surrounding area. We find, that, that portion
of the street can be closed without inconvenience in our opinion and
the portion of the street should be vacated and abandoned.

Ws were careful to have all abutting property owners to add their names
to the petition or agree in writing to said request.

In view of the growth that's apparent in the Roundabout Road and Fifth
Street area, extreme care should be used in any further closing of
East-West streets leading off of Roundabout Road.

Council then called for a duly-advertised public hearing on this requested closing

to be conducted by Council at its forthcoming July 22nd meeting.
