<br />"-1 ( <br /> <br />MONDAY <br /> <br />MARCH 31, 1969 <br /> <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Monday, March <br /> <br />31, 1969, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 1 :00 P.M., for <br /> <br />the purpose of paying tribute to, and honoring the memory of, the late <br /> <br />General Dwight David Eisenhour, 34th President of the United States, who <br /> <br />died March 28, 1969. All members of Council were present, viz., Mayor <br /> <br />F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor Francis T. West; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald <br /> <br />Hartford; and William D. Hobson. <br /> <br />Following a statement by Mayor Renick of the purpose of this special meeting, <br /> <br />Councilman W. Donald Hartford offered a special prayer in honor and memory <br /> <br />of the departed General Eisenhour, after which Mayor Renick paid tribute <br /> <br />through a prepared statement. In conclusion, City Manager Noland read the <br /> <br />following excerpts from the late President's inaugural addresses dated <br /> <br />January 20, 1953, and January 20, 1957, respectively: <br /> <br />My friends, before I begin the expression of those thoughts that I <br />deem appropriate to this moment, would you permit me the privilege <br />of uttering a little private prayer of my own. And I ask that you <br />bow your heads. <br /> <br />Almighty God, as we stand here at this moment my future associates <br />in the executive branch of government join me in beseeching that <br />Thou will ma~e full and complete our dedication to the service of <br />the people in this throng, and their fellow citizens everywhere. <br /> <br />Give us, we pray, the power to discern clearly right from wrong, <br />and allow all our words and actions to be governed thereby, and <br />by the laws of this land. Especially we pray that our concern shall <br />be for all the people regardless of station, race, or calling. <br /> <br />May eooperation be permitted and be the mutual aim of those who, under <br />the concepts of our Constitution, hold to differing political faiths; <br />so that all may work for the good of our belover country and Thy <br />glory.
