15

TUESDAY

APRIL 11. 1967

,--

house and jail just won't suffice, renovated and enlarged, or no. If
this is so, then let us in the city offer our every service and counsel
in assisting the county in securing another adequate city site for
their court house.

<~-

lRst month completed eighteen years of my residency in this area.
Unitl a couple of years ago I was a county resident and my business is
still county located. My interest in the city and county is so
intertwined, it's hard to distinguish differences. I wonder if this
isn'-:, true of the vast majority of area residents. The city and county
has acted jointly and cooperatively in many areas. For example, in the
establishing of Patrick Henry College; in the projected building of the
low level Smith River Bridge. We are jointly represented in both
houses of the State Legislature.

Were the city and county two corporations instead of political
sub-divisions, we would without question sit down together in a climate
of helpfulness to mitigate - if we could - problems such as an adequate
cour-:, house and jail which is of dire interest to all parties concerned.
Why would it not be reasonable for the City Council and Board of
Supe~visors to do likewise.

Indeed, in this matter, the City should extend an arm of friendship.
Let no one misunderstand it as an attempt to be the grasp of a tentacle.
The City's desire, let it be crystal clear, if not to foster dictums
upon our county neighbors: Instead; merely to make ourselves amenable
and available as helpmates. --- To this end I move that Martinsville
City Council formerly extend to the Henry County Board of Supervisors
an invitation to meet \-lith us for the purpose of our offering whatever
assi:3tance we may in the situation of their court house and jail.

Mr. J. I. Barnes appeared before Council and requested City water service for

his proposed subdivision outside the City's corporate limits, off Spruce Street

~-

Extended and near the business site of Frost Septic Tank Service. Council

referred this request to the Planning Commission for its consideration and

recommendation.

Council was adjourned.

-

W ~.~~>~~~ Clerk of Council
