<br />C\ f. <br />-,\, <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MARCH 28, 1972 <br /> <br />(2) Lester Lumber Company -- petition filed February 22, 1972, for <br />''M-l'' zoning of its property at 212 Franklin Street, this hearing <br />to be jointly conducted by Council and the Planning Commission; <br />and <br /> <br />(3) Martin's Estate, Inc. -- petition filed January 25, 1972, and as <br />amended, for "R-6" zoning of properties lying south of Salem <br />Street, between Memorial Boulevard and the Norfolk & Western <br />Railroad. <br /> <br />With a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude for his many years of dedicated <br /> <br />public service as a member of the City School Board (since 1956), Council <br /> <br />accepted the resignation--as of March 31, 1972--of Mr. Henry C. Reed as a <br /> <br />member of the School Board, during which tenure for a number of years Mr. Reed <br /> <br />served as its able Chairman. For Mr. Reed's unexpired term (ending June 30, 1972), <br /> <br />Council appointed Dr. William D. Lewis to membership on said Board. <br /> <br />On behalf of the Virginia Recreation & Park Society, Mr. Oakley H. Fitzgerald, <br /> <br />Vice President of the Martinsville Community Recreation Association, presented <br /> <br />plaques of recognition to Messrs. John W. Holmes, Davis B. Walker, and Clyde <br /> <br />L. Williams (still-active charter members of the Association) for their <br /> <br />contribution of volunteer leadership and service to the youth of Martinsville; <br /> <br />and to Mr. J. Clyde Hooker, Jr., President of Hooker Furniture Corporation, a <br /> <br />citation of appreciation i.e., Youth Service Award, for making his company's <br /> <br />English Field facility available over the years for varied recreational usages and <br /> <br />for his firm's many other worthwhile community activities. In addition, <br /> <br />Mr. William L. Freeland, also active in local recreational programs, publicly <br /> <br />commended the City's Recreation Director, Mr. Herbert O. Hughes, for his out- <br /> <br />standing performance and service in this capacity, in which Council expressed <br /> <br />concurrence. <br />
