C\ f.
-,\,

TUESDAY

MARCH 28, 1972

(2) Lester Lumber Company -- petition filed February 22, 1972, for
''M-l'' zoning of its property at 212 Franklin Street, this hearing
to be jointly conducted by Council and the Planning Commission;
and

(3) Martin's Estate, Inc. -- petition filed January 25, 1972, and as
amended, for "R-6" zoning of properties lying south of Salem
Street, between Memorial Boulevard and the Norfolk & Western
Railroad.

With a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude for his many years of dedicated

public service as a member of the City School Board (since 1956), Council

accepted the resignation--as of March 31, 1972--of Mr. Henry C. Reed as a

member of the School Board, during which tenure for a number of years Mr. Reed

served as its able Chairman. For Mr. Reed's unexpired term (ending June 30, 1972),

Council appointed Dr. William D. Lewis to membership on said Board.

On behalf of the Virginia Recreation & Park Society, Mr. Oakley H. Fitzgerald,

Vice President of the Martinsville Community Recreation Association, presented

plaques of recognition to Messrs. John W. Holmes, Davis B. Walker, and Clyde

L. Williams (still-active charter members of the Association) for their

contribution of volunteer leadership and service to the youth of Martinsville;

and to Mr. J. Clyde Hooker, Jr., President of Hooker Furniture Corporation, a

citation of appreciation i.e., Youth Service Award, for making his company's

English Field facility available over the years for varied recreational usages and

for his firm's many other worthwhile community activities. In addition,

Mr. William L. Freeland, also active in local recreational programs, publicly

commended the City's Recreation Director, Mr. Herbert O. Hughes, for his out-

standing performance and service in this capacity, in which Council expressed

concurrence.
