') ,
- \

TUESDAY

JULY 27, 1971

,-

It appears to our Board, Medical Staff and me that this location
would be ideal and more than adequately meets all of the requirements
stipulated by the state.

1. The land adjoins the site of our new 223-bed general hospital.
Our 50-acre tract was initially acquired to foster the
development of a total medical care complex on one site.

2. All utilities are immediately available.

3. It is located within a short distance of all services, shopping
and recreational facilities of the community including the new
stadium being built on the adjacent property.

4. The geographic location would be ideal to serve the population
of the West Piedmont Planning District and that of the more
westerly portion of the state. This location is almost at the
intersection of Routes 57,58 and 108, and immediately accessible
from Route 220. This accessibility is being improved even more
by the current construction of the 57/58 By-pass.

5. I am not familiar with the philosophy of the Commonwealth of
Virginia on the matter of shared or purchased services; however,
I can certainly envision considerable capital as well as operational
savings to the State as a result of certain hospital facilities
including but not limited to laundry, laboratory, x-ray, physical
therapy, engineering, medical library and all in-patient facilities
if needed by the mental hospital patients who might develop acute
conditions which would require general hospital care.

6. Both the mental and our existing general hospital would benefit
from our various training programs for registered nurses, licensed
practical nurses, laboratory technicians, and administrative
residents. Additionally, we have ongoing in-service training programs
for all departments which could be made available to personnel of
the mental hospital.

7. Paradoxically, although this site is proximal to the hospital and has
easy access to all of the facilities mentioned above, it is heavily
wooded and very little imagination would be required to develop a
portion of it into a quiet park-like atmosphere with adjacent nature
trails.

8. Finally, the Board of Trustees feels its action is in the best interest
of the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County. Succinctly, it would
insure the acquisition of sorely needed psychiatric services; and, it
would provide employment for at least 200 people - with all this
connotes for the local economy.
