<br />I'! 7' <br />'1 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 11, 1977 <br /> <br />extent of applicable controlling laws and after receiving comments thereon from Police <br /> <br />Chief Frank A. Gard, Sr., Council referred this matter to City Manager Noland for study. <br /> <br />Continuing its consideration of the question--recently brought to Council's attention <br /> <br />by memorandum from City Manager Noland--of whether to establish a compensation policy <br /> <br />for members of the City's several boards and/or commissions, Council (by motion, duly // <br /> <br />/....-... <br /> <br />seconded) unanimously directed that members of the Welfare Board and (of) the Planning <br /> <br />Commission be paid the sum of $100.00 per year, such sum to be considered as an allowance <br /> <br />and/or reimbursement for local travel expenses incurred in attending board and/or <br /> <br />commission meetings and to be in lieu of compensation for time and efforts, i.e., for <br /> <br />personal services. Council was informed that, although members of the City School <br /> <br />Board have been receiving compensation over the years in the amount of $100.00 per year, <br /> <br />an inadvertent omission in the authorizinig State statute now exists but will be corrected <br /> <br />by the 1978 Virginia General Assembly. <br /> <br />Upon being informed that the West Piedmont Planning District Commission is consolidating <br /> <br />two of its policy advisory committees (viz., its Transportation-Land Use Committee and its <br /> <br />Environment Committee) into one single committee to be known as its Physical Planning <br /> <br />".-.,. <br /> <br />Policy Advisory Committee, on which two committees Mr. ~orge B. Adams, Jr., and Mr. <br /> <br />James Walter Hopkins (the latter-named being the City's Assistant to the Director of <br /> <br />Public Works) had served, respectively, Council unanimously appointed Mr. Adams to the new <br /> <br />and consolidated committee as the City's representative-member thereon. <br /> <br />Upon being apprised of the receipt of bids for the reconstruction and/or widening of <br /> <br />Commonwealth Boulevard from its present west four-lane terminus to the City's west <br /> <br />corporate limits, for wmich the Economic Development Administration has assured the City <br /> <br />of a grant of up to $250,000.00 therefor, which bids were $293,511.45 submitted by <br />
