:. ~.o(
e;u

THURSDAY

JUNE 19, 1975

In 1973-1974, 34% of Martinsville's School System
Personnel held advanced degrees compared to 25%
in all Virginia cities and 15% in Henry County.
According to John Richmond, Martinsville ranked
number one in the state.

The 1973-1974 Pupil-Teacher ratio in the
Martinsville Schools was 19.5 compared to 20.4
in all Virginia cities and 22 in Henry County.

Fire protection in the City of Martinsville is
provided by the City Fire Department consisting
of 29 paid firemen and 35 volunteers. Martinsville
had an American Insurance Association rating of
Grade 6 and Virginia Rating Bureau Class 2.
Mr. Rives Hodnett, Burch-Hodges-Stone, told me
that most of Henry County is rated as Class 4.
The fire insurance rates in the city are
approximately 30% to 40% cheaper than in most
of Henry County.

The Martinsville Recreation Department has four
full-time employees which serve 47 youth baseball
teams composed of 705 boys, 40 softball teams
with 600 participants, 8 youth football teams
with 250-300 participants, 50 basketball teams
consisting of 300 boys and 200 adults.

The Martinsville City Hall is used extensively
by the general public. According to City records
it is estimated that more than 200 meetings of
non-governmental functions will be held this year.

Martinsville has a conveniently located sanitary
landfill that should last for at least 20 years
for which a certificate to operate has been issued
by the state. According to George Brown, other
localities such as Roanoke County, Roanoke and
Salem do not have long lasting and conveniently
located sanitary landfills at this time.

A Resident Engineer from the State Highway Department
told George Brown that the City's snow removal
program is far superior to that of most cities.

The City provides free leaf collection during the
leaf season and free garbage pickup year round.
In Henry County the average citizen pays $24.00 per
year for garbage picked up in front of the house,
$60.00 per year for garbage picked up behind the
house. Businesses and manufacturers pay between
$96.00 and $480.00 per year for garbage collection.
