F 0j)
L.i ,_..1 "

TUESDAY

AUGUST 12, 1980

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvil1e,

Virginia, with Mayor Barry A. Greene presiding, was held Tuesday, August 12, 1980,

in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being

present, viz., Barry A. Greene, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; L. D. Oakes;

Henry C. Reed; and Francis T. West.

Following the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular

meeting held July 22, 1980 and (of) its special meeting held July 29, 1980.

In acknowledging receipt of two bids submitted for the construction of a shelter

for the Farmers' Market Association on the City-owned Fayette Street Parking Lot

(said bids being $14,759.00 by Bennett-Nichols Construction Company and $20,000.00

by Stanley Bowles, Inc., plus $732.00 for gutter and downspouts), Council unanimously

accepted the bid from--and awarded the contract to--Bennett-Nichols Construction

Company in the amount of $15,491.00 (to include the gutter and downspouts). Council

also acknowledged receipt of a letter (dated August 6, 1980) from Mr. Earl Lawrence,

President of the Martinsvil1e Farmers' Market Association, in which the Association

proposed that, upon completion of the shelter, the Association will levy a

surcharge on its members to finance, when enough funds have been accumulated

(estimated by Mr. Steve Bea1, Vice President, to become sufficient by the end of

twelve months) the cost of individual produce display tables. During the interim,

the proposal indicated, the individual members would continue to furnish their own

display tables. Mr. Sam Craig, of 605 Forest Street, appeared before Council and

expressed his opinion, gained from being the market manager last year, that the

individual members should continue to provide their tables and, further, that there

is no need for the new tables referred to hereinabove.

---I
