(-. <br />'. \) <br /> <br />FRIDAY <br /> <br />MAY 23, 1980 <br /> <br />Pursuant to Council's action from meeting held May 13, 1980, a special meeting <br /> <br />of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, was held Friday, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 11:00 A.M., for the purpose of receiving <br /> <br />from the Martinsville City School Board its recommended 1980-81 budget and such <br /> <br />supplementary information, with regard thereto, as the School Board might desire <br /> <br />to present. All members of Council were present, viz., William D. Hobson, Mayor; <br /> <br />William C. Cole, Jr., Vice Mayor; Barry A. Greene; L. D. Oakes; and Francis T. <br /> <br />West. Also present was Mr. Henry C. Reed, Councilman-elect. Representing the <br /> <br />School System were School Board members W. K. Putney (Chairman), Mrs. Margaret <br /> <br />(Jethro H.) Irby, Worth Carter, and Harry P. Varni Dr. James E. Calkins, <br /> <br />Superintendent, and members of his administrative staff. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by opening comments by School Board Chairman <br /> <br />W. K. Putney, Council received from Dr. Calkins various exhibits (numbering six) <br /> <br />comparing annual School System budgets for the past several years and the funding <br /> <br />sources thereof, operational costs of the seven schools within the system as well <br /> <br />as system operational costs by categories, and revisions of its initially-submitted <br /> <br />1980-8l budget (including School-source income) in the amount of $180,800.00, enabling <br /> <br />Council to approve a 1980-81 City Budget, as heretofore revised and subject to a <br /> <br />required public hearing and final action by Council, with no increase in local tax <br /> <br />rates. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council accepted the School <br /> <br />Board's 1980-81 budget, as revised. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />W.
