t-C.~ C
:i lJ

TUESDAY

AUGUST 28, 1979

Our thrust at this time is working with the residents of the Rives
Road sections of Martinsville and the Carver Lane area of Bassett
in cleaning up and beautifying their immediate areas and making
examples of them for other residents to follow. These two areas
were chosen for their cooperation and support as well as their
visibility to the general public. With a little more publicity,
the Clean Community Commission will soon be thought of as a common
idea, not as if it were a group of vigilantes out to "get" people.
The educational process will be slow, for sure, but we hope that
it will instill pride into the area's residents.

Council received, too, the following "Water Systems Improvements--UDAG" construction

schedule, pursuant to Council's recent inquiry thereon:

Activity

Starting Date

Completion Date

I. A new transmission main from the Beaver
Creek Reservoir to the Treatment Plant.
(a) Phase I - Reservoir to the Covington House
(b) Phase II - Covington House to the Plant

August, 1979
February, 1980

March, 1980
December, 1980

2. Installation of new and higher capacity
raw water pumping equipment at the
Impounding Reservoir.

November, 1979

March, 1980

3. Water plant improvements including
the construction of lagoons.

March, 1980

October, 1981

4. The construction of a one million
gallon clear water storage tank.

January, 1981

December, 1981

5. Spillway revisions that would raise
the level of the Beaver Creek
Reservoir approximately two feet.

January, 1981

July, 1981

6. Reactivation of a pumping station
at the intersection of Beaver Creek
and Hairston Branch.

June, 1981

December, 1981

Assistant City Manager-Public Works Director George W. Brown informed Council that although

much of the information required for the filing of the recently-authorized preliminary application

for Federal Community Development Act funds to finance the cost of rehabilitating certain

existing residential structures within the City has already been compiled by City personnel,

the retaining by the City of a consultant (with expertise in this field) to guide and oversee

the work of City personnel in this compilation process would probably enhance the City's

_~_._~_~,___"_._._,"".,_",_._,._"..,......~_.,,_..~,.,w..'''''''''''''''_''__'_'.'__"_~W'_;'''_'"___~~
