<br />36 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JULY 11, 1978 <br /> <br />Council continued for consideration, pending preparation of an appropriate ordinance, <br /> <br />the recommendation (from the City Manager and the Building Official) that Council <br />update the City's Bui1ding-Plumbing-Mechanical-Fire-E1ectric Codes by adopting the <br />1978 editions of the applicable BOCA Codes and the National Electric Code. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council reappointed Dr. John D. <br /> <br />French to membership on the Community Services Board of the Piedmont Regional Mental <br /> <br />Health & Mental Retardation Services Board for a three-year term ending June 30, 1981, <br /> <br />meanwhile expressing Council's appreciation of Dr. French's interest in, and dedicated <br /> <br />services to, the welfare of the community through this medium. <br /> <br />Council continued, for consideration at its next regular meeting, the appointing of a <br /> <br />citizen to the Physical Planning Advisory Committee of the West Piedmont Planning District <br /> <br />Commission. <br /> <br />In connection with a communication from Mr. C. M. Conner, Jr., Staff Attorney of the <br /> <br />Division of Legislative Services, Commonwealth of Virginia, notifying the Council that <br /> <br />the 1978 Virginia General Assembly adopted a resolution directing the study of "consolidation <br /> <br />of the times of general elections in Virginia", from which a proposal has developed whereby <br /> <br />all general municipal elections would be held (in even-numbered years) coincident with the <br /> <br />November general elections, Council received the following report of the City's Electoral <br /> <br />Board, presented by Mr. Harry G. Copenhaver, Secretary, following which report presentation, <br /> <br />and a discussion thereof, Council unanimously expressed opposition to said proposal and <br /> <br />directed that an appropriate resolution, expressing said opposition in favor of retaining <br /> <br />the present system of holding municipal elections, be prepared for Council's consideration <br /> <br />and/or adoption at its next regular meeting, for relay to the special commission studying <br /> <br />this matter. <br />
