411

TUESDAY

AUGUST 28, 1984

former Mayor William D. Hobson (of 1013 Fayette Street), along with Mr. Pritchett,

suggested various needs for public transportation service throughout the community,

whereas Councilman Williams predicted that such service is going to be proposed in

the not-too-distant future. Councilman Groden, asserting that the Comprehensive Plan

"speaks to transportation" and noting that the trial-period shuttle-bus service being

recommended will be privately funded, offered his motion (which was duly seconded)

that the City accept the proposal as presented. The motion carried unanimously.

-

By written proposal and supporting documents and, also, in person, Dr. Noel T. Boaz,

a native of Martinsville and a professor with the Department of Anthropology of New

York University, offered to lease the former Joseph Martin School facility (in

Martinsville) for a period of two years, with option to purchase, and to make certain_

renovations thereto, for the purpose of establishing therein a natural history museum,

financing of which would be under the auspices of The Boaz Foundation (of which Dr.

Boaz is Director) and through research grants. After some queries centered on the pro-

posed renovations and usage of the premises, followed by the enthusiastic endorsement

of Dr. Boaz's project by several citizens present, some of whom were former students

or teachers at Joseph Martin School or are residents of the area or--as in the case of

Mrs. Vergia B. Hobson, wife of former Mayor William D. Hobson--a retired Guidance

Counselor at Martinsville Senior High School, and with commendation from members of

Council of Dr. Boaz for this ambitious undertaking, Council unanimously authorized the

preparation of a lease agreement (between the City and Dr. Boaz and/or The Boaz

Foundation) for return to--and action by--Council.

By means of the following resolution, duly and unanimously adopted, Council delegated

to the City's Industrial Development Authority the power to make allocations of its

"private activity bond limit" to "private activity bonds" to assure exemption from

-------T'
