<br />3~ <br /> <br />MONDAY <br /> <br />JULY 2, 1984 <br /> <br />,-' <br /> <br />Pursuant to Section 5(a) of Chapter 2 of the Charter of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />an organizational meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, as con- <br /> <br />stituted effective July 1, 1984, was held Monday, July 2, 1984, in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, beginning at 9:00 A.M., all members being present, viz., William C. Cole, Jr., <br /> <br />Alfred T. Groden (elected at the May 1st general election for a four-year term beginning <br /> <br />July 1, 1984), L. D. Oakes (re-elected at said general election for a four-year term be- <br /> <br />ginning July 1, 1984), Eliza H. Severt, and Clyde L. Williams (elected at the May 1st <br /> <br />general election for a four-year term beginning July 1, 1984). <br /> <br />This meeting began with an invocation given by The Reverend James E. Baucom, D. D., Pastor <br /> <br />of the First Baptist Church, Martinsville, Virginia, and was presided over by Miss <br /> <br />Christine R. Koger, Deputy Clerk of Martinsville City Circuit Court, in the absence of Mr. <br /> <br />Jesse D. Clift, Clerk of said Court, presently hospitalized. <br /> <br />After administering the required oaths of office to Messrs. Groden, Oakes, and Williams, <br /> <br />Miss Koger invited nominations for the office of Mayor for a two-year term beginning July 1, <br /> <br />1984. Councilmember Severt nominated Councilman William C. Cole, Jr., for this office; and, <br /> <br />there being no other nominations submitted, Councilman Cole was declared Mayor, after which <br /> <br />he subscribed to the required oath of office. <br /> <br />At the invitation for nominations for the office of Vice-Mayor, Mayor Cole nominated <br /> <br />Councilmember Severt; and, there being no other nominations submitted, Mrs. Severt was de- <br /> <br />clared Vice-Mayor for a two-year term beginning July 1, 1984, after which she subscribed to <br /> <br />the required oath of office. <br /> <br />In assuming his role as Mayor, having already served the past two years as Mayor, Mr. Cole <br /> <br />emphasized his keen interest in every facet of local government and urged his fellow-members <br />
