<br />Through economic development and new industry <br />Ways to support expansion of existing industry <br />Make current industries feel welcome and appreciated <br />Construction of new housing <br />Increased retail <br />· The way our community is perceived by the media; negative media <br />· Boundary adjustment in any direction <br />· Increase exposure to culture and cultural education (artists in residence, performing arts) <br />· Make sure Council and Council/Staff are on the same team (support that recognizes that Council <br />Members may be coming in with different agendas but need trust and collective agenda) <br />· Communication - make sure that everyone receives the same information in a reasonable time <br />· Have confidence and trust across the board for the Council Members; this requires open <br />communication and dialogue <br />Listen; do you really know that person's opinion? <br />Don't tell me what you think that I want to hear; I don't want to be humored <br />Don't' be apprehensive about giving me an honest answer <br />· Increase trust <br />Make sure that I can trust that when the City Manager says, "X" it is "X" <br />Make that the Council can trust that the Manager isn't advocating [more] for staff <br />Make sure that communication to the Council isn't convoluted in any way <br />· Council Members continue to invite other Council Members to participate <br />· How the community perceives the Council; credibility currently low; strive to be as open as we can; I if <br />people have a negative view of themselves, it tends to give one a negative view of others <br />· Develop leadership for our future <br />Listen to our youth to help then create vision and goals for the future <br />5/10/15 years down the road, if we want young people to come back, we have to know what they <br />want or will come back for <br />· Need Council Members more en9aged at State level; need to create relationship and use the network; <br />currently we only deal with our State representatives; in Virginia, they tend to want to hear from elected <br />officials versus the city manager <br />· Council should get more involved in VML and look to other communities for ideas <br />· Council more visible in the community <br />· Community event that the City can rally around <br /> <br />6 <br />
