(continued from first page)

Why I would like to be considered:

As a citizen who enjoys the benefits of living here, I feel it is my duty and responsibility
to provide support for the community. I want to serve Martinsville-the city where I live,
work, and raise my family, in a role fitting my experience, interests, and career. I am a
strong supporter of public education and believe that children have the right to the best
education possible. I believe all children can learn and should have every opportunity to
succeed. If selected, I will strive to contribute in a constructive manner to the Board, the
Martinsville school system, and the children that are in our care.

What particular qualifications I have:

· I am a resident ofMartinsville and have a child in the Martinsville School system.
· I have served as a volunteer at Martinsville Middle School assisting with
classroom instruction and in providing curriculum resources related to science and
by participating in Family Nights. The last Family Night, I brought my telescope
to a night-time sky viewing event. It was gratifying to hear students' enthusiastic
exclamations at seeing the rings of Saturn for the first time.
· For the last four years, I have served on the Martinsville Middle School SEMAA
Lab Advisory Board and am involved in planning the next event in October.
· I am serving on a six-member agency steering committee for the
Martinsville/Henry County After Three Initiative-a program aimed at creating a
community-based after-school program system for middle and high school
students.
· I have been directly involved in education my entire career as a teacher, university
instructor, education researcher, in professional organizations, and currently as the
Director of Education and Public Programs at the Virginia Museum of Natural
History.
· I taught for twelve years in the Roanoke County school system where I also
served as County Science Fair Coordinator, Gifted Enrichment Program instructor,
and faculty sponsor of Peer Mediation program, Science Club, Student Assistance
Program, and in-school video production.
· I have advanced degrees (M. A. Ed. and Ph. D.) in education. I have a Virginia
Department of Education Postgraduate Professional license with endorsements in
Earth and Space Science and General Supervisor.
· I have worked on state initiatives related to school reform including the Virginia
Science Standards of Learning (SOL), SOL Learning Assessment Committee,
Textbook Evaluation and Adoption Committees (Science), and Reviewer of Earth
Science Enhanced Scope and Sequence.
· I currently serve in various capacities for state education organizations including:
Virginia Association of Science Teachers, Virginia Science Education Leadership
Association, Virginia Education Technology Advisory Council, and Virginia
Resource Use Education Council.

Application for Martinsville School Board

Dennis A. Casey
