I*hillips <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WiqEREAS, the residents of Southside Vh'ginia have come to value higher education as a catalyst for <br />economic revitalization; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, many calls for the establishment ora new public college in Southside Virginia have been <br />made over the years, including State Senator Charles IL Hawkins of Pittsylvania County and, more <br />recently, Lieutenant Governor Timothy M. Kalne; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, while the Commonwealth is determining hs ability to maintain an ongoing commitment to <br />a new institution, establishing a college will require local funds; and <br /> <br />WltEREAS, in January 2004 the Harvest Foundation of the Piedmont presented the Commonwealth <br />with a $50,000,000 d~allenge grant to help begin a new college in the Martinsville area; and <br /> <br />WItEREAS, education and knowledge are fhe foundations of ~uccess in our modem economy and are <br />necessary for the mcc~ of Southside as a region; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, while the City of Maninsville has many needs that it must attend to for its residents, <br />establishing a state baccalaureate degree-granting college is of paramount and overriding importance to <br />the wellbeing of our dtizens, the rebirth of our economy and the cohesive progress of the Southside <br />region, and <br /> <br />WItEREAS, the City of Martinsville wishes to show its commitment to a new state institution in a <br />tangible, measurable, positive manner, now, therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in special session assembled <br />February 1, 2005, that it does hereby support the establishment by the Commonwealth of a new four- <br />year, residential, baccalaureate degree-granting college in Martinsville or Henry County; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that k does hereby pledge to the Commonwealth the <br />sam orS1 million (one million dollars) over the next ten years, whether in direct cash contribution or <br />through in-kind services, including real property, to fund infrastructure improvements necessary to the <br />establishment of a four-year, residemial, baccalaureate degree-granting college by 2007; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTltE~R RESOLVED by the Council that this resolution be forwarded with due haste to the <br />leadership of the Commonwealth. <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br />Johnathan B.
