Monday <br /> <br />Clerk qf Council <br />Johnathan B. Phillips <br /> <br />WHEREAS, David B. Worthy, a resident of Martinsville, passed away December 3, 2004 at the age <br />of 74; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, David Worthy, a Marine Corps veteran, spent his professional life as a competent and <br />respected attorney in Martinsville after graduating from Yale University and the University of Virginia <br />School of Law; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, David Worthy was appointed at the City of Martinsville's part-time attorney on <br />September 13, 1972 and served in that capacity for over 30 years until his resignation in February of <br />2003; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during his tenure as city attorney, Dave Worthy proved himself time and again a fine <br />counsel and advocate for Martinsville and its City Council on legal issues and represented the city in <br />various legal actions, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, although Mr. Worthy's place was alongside Council members in meetings, he never <br />desired to take on the role of decision-maker; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Council always respected Mr. Worthy's opinion and knew they could depend on him not <br />only as an adviser, but as a friend; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, all who knew Dave Worthy will miss the wisdom and experience he brought to the city, <br />along with his quiet demeanor, his easy manner and his unassuming sense of humor; now, therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Martinsville, Virginia, assembled this 14th day of <br />December, 2004, that it does hereby express its sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of <br />David B. Worthy, and does express the sense of the community that, while Martinsville will greatly <br />miss Mr. Worthy, it does and will continue to remember his contributions to the overail improvement <br />and development of our city. <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />Johnathan B.
