Martinsville <br /> <br />Agenda Item Number <br />Department: <br />Date: <br /> <br />City Council <br />Agenda Summary <br /> <br />Agenda Item: Follow-up discussion on the City's firing range <br /> <br />Sllmmary: The Martinsville Police Department's pistol/rille range, originally built around 1961, is <br />located south of Martinsville in Henry County within the City Industrial Park. The range consisted of seven <br />shooting lanes and a one hundred yard rifle lane. Use of the range is restricted to sworn police officers. <br /> <br /> Firms safety is our number one priority at the range and to this date, we have never had <br />any shooting accident. Although there have been a few citizen complaints about the noise during our <br />night firing (After 9:00pm). Night firing training is now conducted during the winter months between 5:00 <br />pm and 9:00 pm. The range has been accident free for over 43 years. Additional information is attached. <br /> <br />Options: <br /> <br />1. Continue to operate the range (In a Safe Manor). <br />2. Locate and construct a new range (Possibly the Ciiz_l LondfdO. <br />3. Use a neighboringjurisdiction's range (/J-Ava/lob/e). <br /> <br />Option 1. <br />Option 2. <br />Option 3. <br /> <br />It is the most cost effective, convenient, and safe option. <br />It is the most cosily, remains convenient, and would be a safe optiOn. <br />It is cost effective, would not be convenient, and should be safe. <br /> <br /> The Department recommends that the city continue to operate the existing Firing Range with <br />the understanding that night firings will be limited to winter months between the hours of 5:00 pm and <br />9:00 pm. Safety, as always, will remain a high priority. <br /> <br />Recommended Council Action: Recommend Option One (1).
