Page 4

upcoming ISO assessment. The purchase of the so-called Quint fire
engine/ladder combination does just that. From an operational
standpoint it is two vehicles in one. It can be taken to any fire scene in
the City by one firefighter and set up at the Kre scene by one fire fighter.
It can also deliver water to multi-story locations as well as perform
essential ventilation and rescue functions. In that our purchase strategy
involves the sale or trade-in of Ladder I and Engine 110, the City's fire
fleet will be reduced by one truck which will have a positive impact on
future Fire Department maintenance and repair budgets.

With this in mind, it is my recommendation that City Council approve the
purchase of a Quint fire engine/ladder apparatus which action by the
Council will be consistent with the 1997 Apparatus Replacement Plan and
will help us to achieve certain other goals as outlined above.

Resp/ectfully subm/~ed,

Earl B.
