September 5, 2002 <br /> <br /> A work session meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, was <br />held on September 5, 2002, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building, beginning at <br />11:00 A. M., with Mayor Gene Teague presiding, to discuss City telecommunications. <br />Council Members present included: M. Gene Teague, Mayor; Terry L. Roop, Vice <br />Mayor; and Council Members Joseph R. Cobbe, Bruce H. T: Dallas, and J. Ronald <br />Ferrill. <br /> <br /> Tom Harned, Director of Economic Development, presented a historical overview <br />of the telecommunications industry and an update on the Martinsville Informational <br />Network (MINet). MINet currently connects all City buildings, schools, the Blue Ridge <br />Regional Library, Patrick Henry Community College, and the Henry County <br />Administration Building. He introduced the Technology Team: Robert Harris, Electric; <br />Mike Scaffidi, Public Works; Tiffani Underwood, Economic Development; Paul Roop, <br />Electric; Wade Bartlett, Finance; and Matthew Hankins, Public Information Officer. <br /> <br /> Tiffani Underwood, City Marketing Specialist, stated that the MINet capabilities <br />include high-speed communication, real-time interaction, traffic signal control, <br />substation monitoring, and powerful marketing tool. She reviewed Virginia Tech's e- <br />Corridor Program, e-Dan, which is the network for the City of Danville and County of <br />Pittsylvania, and LENOWISCO, which is the network for the Counties of Lee, Norton, <br />and Wise. She stated that the next step for the City is to apply for a Certificate of Local <br />Exchange Carriers (CLEC); the Cities of Bristol and Danville are initial applicants. <br />Council voice strong support of the C~EC application. <br /> <br /> <br />
