Phillips <br /> <br />Race Equality Week - September 23 - 27, 2002 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville is committed to promoting racial equahty and equal access <br />as a fundamental aspect of a healthy and diverse community united by common purposes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a rich diversity of cultures, values and peoples creates a stronger Martinsviile <br />through fostering friendships that defy barriers of culture, color and creed; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville hereby joins local officials across the United States in a <br />national campaign to promote racial equality and justice; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, we agree with the resolve of the National League of Cities declaring racism unjust <br />and advocating equal rights for all citizens of Marrinsviile; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, by Act of Congress of the United States dated July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act of <br />1964 was adopted banning discrimination because of a person~s color, race, national origin, <br />religion, or sex; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, by Act of Congress of the United States dated July 9, 1868, the 14th Amendment of <br />the Constitution of the United States was adopted giving ail persons born or naturalized in the <br />United States the right to due process and equal protection under the law; now, therefore <br /> <br />I, M. Gene Teague, Mayor of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, do hereby &dare the week of <br />September 23-27, 2002 as Race Equality Week in the City of Martinsviile and urge all citizens to <br />join together to support this effort and, further, that on behalf of the City Council of <br />Martinsviile, I reaffirm our commitment to ensuring racial equality and justice in our City and to <br />working with the National League of Cities to sustain this commitment and pledge to continue <br />support for efforts which encourage racial equality and unity during the coming year. <br /> <br /> M.
