XI.

XII.

XIII.

Consider adoption, on first reading, of Ordinance No. 2002-8 adding
Section 1-17 Special Assessment authorizing a processing fee not to
exceed $25 on any individual admitted to a county, city or regional jail
following conviction to Chapter 1 of the City Code. (See Enclosure #10)

COMMEI~ITI$: The General Assembly recently enacted this amendment
to the Code of Virginia allowing the collection of this processing fee to be
effective July 1, 2002. Henry County has adopted this Ordinance
authorizing the $25 fee and to be consistent, we are recommending
adoption on first reading.

Consider, second reading, of Amendment to Ordinance No. 2002-2
adding Section 1-16 Special Assessment for funding of courthouse
s~curity personnel as part of costs in criminal and traffic cases to
Chapter 1 of the City Code. {See Enclosure #11)

COI~IMIgl~ITI$: We recommend adoption of this Ordinance on second
reading.

Conduct a Public Hearing for the purpose of receiving/interviewing
citizens interested in appointment to two positions on the City's School
Board. (See Enclosure #12)

COMMENTS: As Council is aware, the current members--Bernie F.
Gray, Jr. and Charles W. Davies--terms end June 30, 2002. Mr. Gray
has served three full terms and is not eligible for reappointment. Mr.
Davis is eligible to serve another three-year term and has expressed his
interest in reappointment. Additionally, we have received Information
Forms from Kevin Barrett Laine of 1100 Cherokee Trail, Nancy L. Baker,
919 Hunting Ridge Road, Kourtney Barker of 1305 Mulberry Road and
James H. dohnson, Jr. of 1507 White Oak Court. Should Council desire,
it can convene in Closed Session, under Subsection 1 of the FOI .Act, for
the purpose of interviewing the applicants. According to State Law, only
those citizens interviewed by Council or whose names are brought up
during the Public Hearing can be considered for appointment, and
appointments cannot be made until seven days after the Public Hearing,
thus this item will again be on Council's June 20th Agenda.

XIV. Business from the Floor
