May 22, 2001 <br /> <br /> A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, was held on May 22, 2001, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building, <br />beginning at 7:33 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council Members present <br />included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council <br />Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, J. Ronald Ferrill, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br /> Following the invocation by Council Member Ferrill, Mayor Crabtree welcomed <br />everyone to the meeting and recognized Tyler Bassett for working on his Boy Scout <br />community involvement badge. <br /> <br /> Council Member Dallas moved to approve the minutes of April 24, 2001, and <br />May 8, 2001, as presented, and May 14, 2001 as amended; the motion was duly <br />seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas <br />(5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> <br /> Council considered a presentation by students from Martinsville Middle School <br />regarding a creative problem-solving project on a youth center for the City. Students <br />presenting included Alicia Vickers, Malone McGinn, Jennifer Eden, Sarah Brown, and <br />Tyler Bassett. Council requested more information regarding the youth center and the <br />$85,000 grant applied for by Nancy Bell, of the School System. <br /> <br /> Council considered business from the floor. Hardin Edwards, of 810 Forest Lake <br /> Drive, requested that a proposal be made to change legislation to require apartments to <br /> have more than one usable exit. Discussion was held regarding whether this is a City <br /> or State issue. Council requested that this matter be included in the next legislative <br /> packet and asked Earl B. Reynolds, Jr., City Manager, to invite Fred Gordon, Building <br /> Official, to meet with Council to review statewide building codes. Jimmy Crigger, of <br /> <br /> <br />
