<br />A work session meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, was
<br />
<br />held to review the Public Works Department on April 12, 2001, in the Administrative
<br />
<br />Conference Room of the Municipal Building, beginning at 9:15 A. M., with Mayor Mark
<br />
<br />Crabtree presiding. Council Members present included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M.
<br />
<br />Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, J. Ronald Ferrill,
<br />
<br />and Terry L. Roop.
<br />
<br />Council Member Ferrill'moved to adopt the following Resolution; the motion was
<br />
<br />dUlyseconded'and 'carried with the-following vote, with all .members v, oti.ng;~ ..M.0,te S-~-0;-
<br />
<br />Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None:
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, Pillowrex Fieldcrest Cannon employees are concerned
<br />over losing their jobs as the company goes through and emerges
<br />from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy; and
<br />WHEREAS, some of the local employees have asked the City of
<br />Martinsville to join in their efforts to preserve their jobs in the
<br />community; and
<br />WHEREAS, learning from a recent article in the Charlotte Observer
<br />that Pillowtex Fieldcrest Cannon is considering outsourcing an
<br />unknown quantity of the company's manufacturing, which would
<br />result in the elimination of Fieldcrest Cannon jobs; and
<br />WHEREAS, without the high-paying jobs that these workers have
<br />held for many years, the local merchants, churches, community
<br />organizations and tax base will suffer profoundly, as will the
<br />workers and their families; NOW, THEREFORE,
<br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville,
<br />Virginia, assembled in special session this 12th day of April 2001,
<br />that said Council directs the City Manager to forward an executed
<br />copy of this resolution to Anthony Williams, President and CEO of
<br />Pillowtex Corporation, Ken Lewis, CEO, Bank of America,
<br />Congressman Virgil Goode, The Honorable George Allen and the
<br />Honorable John Warner United States Senators, The Honorable
<br />James S. Gilmore III, Governor of The Commonwealth of Virginia
<br />and Mike Seidle, Chairman, Henry County Board of Supervisors.

<br />Leon Towarnicki, Public Works Director, distributed handouts and discussed a
<br />
<br />department overview, organizational chad, administration and support services, and
<br />
<br />
